Secondary teaching specialist areas and prerequisites

The following information is to help students studying secondary pre-service programs with specialist area unit selection. Students should refer to the Specialist Area Guidelines on the VIT (Victorian Institute of Teaching) website for more information.

Teaching specialist areas require the following pre-requisites:

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

A minor sequence in linguistics

or a second language (ie not the teacher's first language) together with teaching methodology which covers TESOL principles and approaches for a range of educational contexts, including factors affecting the development of language proficiency, and assessment procedures to facilitate appropriate placement of students with EAL needs

General science A minor sequence in general science which includes at least two of biology, chemistry, Earth science/geology and physics

Languages Other Than English - LOTE (Single and Double specialism) A major sequence (Post Year 12) in Chinese, French, German, Greek, Italian, Indonesian, Hebrew, Japanese or Korean plus proficiency in spoken and written language. Media Studies

Psychology

Visual Arts (Single and Double specialism) A major study in relevant area(s) of Visual Arts (eg, photography, sculpture, drawing, ceramics, multimedia) which includes at least one quarter of a year of practical Arts content. Legend of the terms:

  • Part: Successful tertiary study in a subject having the weighting of at least one quarter of a year of full-time study in the course from which it is derived.
  • Minor Sequence: A total of half a year of successful full-time tertiary study, usually comprising sequential discipline study taken over two years, e.g. a part in each of the first and second years of tertiary study, or equivalent study.
  • Major: A total of three-quarters of a year of successful full-time tertiary study, usually comprising sequential discipline study taken over three years, e.g. a part in each of the first, second and third years of tertiary study, or equivalent study.
  • One year of study: One year equivalent full time tertiary study.
